GoSee Silver Fashion Award Winner, 2014.
We showcase the incredible GoSee Silver Fashion Award winning editorial by German photographer Stephan Glathe in ISSUE 03. We talk about his inspiration, Paris Haute Couture and how to create truly powerful photographs.
Where are you based?
Tell us about yourself.
I grew up in the wine region around Stuttgart in Germany. Since the age of 12, I spent most of my free time either behind the camera or in the darkroom. In 2009, I finally turned my hobby into a full-time profession. Outside of photography, I try to spend as much time as possible with my wife and our friends - mostly travelling and enjoying good food and wine.
Did you study photography or a related course?
No, I'm an entirely self-taught photographer. The great work of Peter Lindbergh initially inspired me to start photographing women and fashion. Even today, I learn a lot from looking around and studying the masters of fashion photography.
Which photographers inspire your practice?
Patrick Demarchelier, Mario Testino and Peter Lindbergh (as previously mentioned), are the big names that come to mind first. However, most of the work that inspires me on a day-to-day basis are actually by lesser known photographers like Mikael Jansson, Koray Birand, Lachlan Bailey and Signe Vilstrup to name a few.
Tell us about your work.
My work is predominantly centred on high fashion, sensuality and class. Most of my work is in the area of swimwear and lingerie, menswear and high fashion editorials. However, I also like the classic portrait and adverting commissions, that come into my hands every now and then. I shoot around 10 days per month - the rest of the time I spend preparing for upcoming shoots or processing recent ones. My work has been on the covers of FSHN and Factice, with editorials also featured in magazines such as Quality Magazine, HUF Magazine, Remark and 1968 Magazine.
What do you love about photography?
I love the ability to create powerful images working together with great people.
Tell us about the featured editorial, Tropical Moods.
This editorial recently won The GoSee Silver Fashion Award 2014. The editorial was inspired by Frida Kahlo, featuring mostly Haute Couture from Paris. The beautiful styling is the work of the very talented Sayuri Bloom, who also created the amazing flower head pieces showcased.
