The duo behind the lens are Sally Ann and Emily May Gunawan, photographer siblings currently based in Australia and Indonesia. Focusing on fashion, beauty, and commercial works, their photography aesthetic is known as vibrant and quirky.
Where are you based?
Australia / Indonesia.
Tell us about yourselves.
We were born in 90s Sydney and grew up in Jakarta – which made us feel Indonesian at heart wherever home is. We have both been hooked on photography since teenage years and started this as a hobby by taking pictures on vacations and trips. Travelling together inspires us the most.
Did you study photography or a related course?
Sally studied Visual Arts in Melbourne and Emily studied Fashion Business in Jakarta. Studying fashion in college kind of got us into the network and it just went snowballing from there.
Tell us about your work.
Mainly we shoot fashion, sometimes weddings and sometimes commercials. Fashion is the best thing because you can be creative and bring crazy ideas come to life. But you have got keep the balance and work with clients, that is like bread and butter. Our style can be described as vibrant with a little side of quirkiness, as we love to play with colours! We do this full time and by the time we're writing this, we just finished our 5th shoot this week. Some weeks are quieter which can be relaxing. It varies.
What do you love about photography?
The way it can speak louder than words.
Which photographers inspire your practice?
Lots and lots! At the moment, Guy Bourdin and Tim Walker in particular.
What editorials are featuring in ISSUE 03 of Carnival Magazine?
Anonymous and Desert Rose
Tell us about this featured editorial, Desert Rose.
The concept behind this one is to capture one of Indonesia’s beautiful landscapes in a fashion shoot. As we’ve never been to this city, might as well choose this for the project. Travelling can be really inspiring and this is one of the best location we’ve ever been to. Being an Indonesian, we would love to share this to the world. It was the first time we went to a desert with the infinity, fatamorgana-like view. The endless walking distance made us realise that what you see is not what you get. This was shot in Parangtritis Sand Dune, Yogyakarta and we worked with Andhika Dharmapermana (stylist), Indah Dwi (hair/make up artist), and Putri Sulistyowati (model @ Look). Published for Garuda Indonesia In-flight Magazine. The thirst, heat, and endless sand dune are definitely challenging for a fashion shoot. And we lost our hat because of the crazy wind!
