L'Officiel Ukraine, Reno Mezger.
Carnival Magazine speaks to Hamburg based photographer Reno Mezger about editorial L'Officiel Ukraine. He talks inspiration, his burning passion to communicate his vision and his love for collaboration...
Where are you based?
For the past years and since I took up photography as my profession, I have made Hamburg my home. From here, my work takes me across the globe. This is something I enjoy very much.
Tell us about yourself.
I was born in Leipzig, a charming little place in the middle of Germany. As a child, you could find me on sports grounds nearly every single day of the week. But there was also an artistic side to life and to myself that I was soon about to discover. Today I am a big fan of independent cinema, handcrafted design & art and modern dance performances. And live music - the louder the better.
Did you study photography or a related course?
I always liked to look at photographs from an early age. They had some mystique in their making that I couldn't quite grasp. Wanting to take them myself only crossed my mind in my late twenties. I was working as an art director in advertising agencies back then, using images of other artists for ads and billboards. One day I couldn't resist curiosity anymore and started to do what I do now. Curiosity still drives me. And the question, 'What if?'.
Tell us about your work.
I do fashion photography, that's what I love and never get tired of.
What do you love about photography?
It's my favourite way of sharing what I imagine, to bring out my inner vision. I like the idea of touching people with what I do, triggering emotions, making them feel in a certain way. Every project challenges me to create something different, something I have never done before - but always in the most beautiful and elegant ways possible.
Which photographers inspire your practice?
I love the story telling of Steven Meisel, the creativity of Sølve Sundsbø and the alluring style of Tony Duran.
What editorials are featuring in Issue 02 of Carnival Magazine?
L'Officiel Ukraine, published in July 2014.
Tell us about the featured photography.
For L'Officiel I collaborated with stylist Patrick Lief, hair stylist Fee Steinvorth and makeup artist Isabel Peters. My pictures are team work. All those individual skills by many different artists come together in one single picture. It's like conducting an orchestra. A magical moment when everything falls into place.
