Editorial / Call To Faith
Photographer Carmen Mitrotta was born in 1987 in Grottaglie, Italy. In 2010, she got a degree at the Art School in Lecce. Always attracted by visual arts, she was devoted to painting, but made an early focusing exclusively on photography. After the Erasmus exchange program in the Eastern Europe, she moved to Milan to attend the Advanced Course in Professional Italian Institute of Photography (IIF). Through the self-portrait, the experimentation, and the dark room work, she approached a study related to colour and shapes that that become peculiarity and the main theme of her work.

I grew up in the south of Italy, near the sea. It is very difficult for me to talk about hobbies because my work is just one of them. I am very passionate about art, plants and food.
Did you study photography or a related course?
I began my studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, and then completed a Master's degree in Photography
Tell us about your work.
My photography is characterized by creating spaces in which to invent stories. I could define these in still life form but it would be an understatement. I have a real passion for working with art galleries and incorporating fine art within my work.
What do you love about photography?
The possibility to create with reality.
Which photographers inspire your practice?
I especially love the work of Irving Penn, Cindy Sherman and Carl Kleiner. I am also very much inspired by painters.

Call to Faith / Denature
Tell us about the featured photography.
The two projects are created in collaboration with the stylist Josephine Melfi. Call to Faith considers what it means to be of Muslim teenagers in 2013. How can there be integration between the mystical Islamic religious and commercial occidental? Can the world live together in peace with strong traditions? Call to Faith depicts a teenager, who is closely tied to their beliefs, wearing highly fashionable clothes. It is about finding the right personal balance between vanity and the European cult of the Middle East, through essential clothes and explosions of colour. DeNature is a union of forms, colours and art; where everything is a fun game of similarities. We played with refined forms of design. Usually you gain new knowledge as you take on each new adventure.
